Band Bio
The Other Syde is currently a trio out of Warren, Ohio. The band started when Mike Opalka (lead vocals, synth, beats) found Jay Newman at Hot Topic in Niles, Ohio. He asked him to join the band and he said, "Hell yeah!" They shared the same vision of creating a new original sound along the lines of The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails because they were sick of all the bullshit they heard everywhere else.
Mike and Jay started playing with a few others (who aren't really important enough to name) in the loft of the garage of a friend's house. This period didn't last long because the cops became quite a nuiscance (damn those neighbors). The others in the band were also becoming quite annoying because they either weren't feeling the concept of what Mike and Jay wanted or they had their mind on other things.
Mike and Jay decided to break off by themselves and The Other Syde suddenly became a duo. The pair set up shop in the Dungeon Studio (Mike's basement) and recorded a five-song demo with Mike on lead vocals, sythesizers, and beats and Jay on all guitars, basses, and backing vocals. The guys started passing out demos to anyone who was hungry for the new sound and they started to develop a small army of fans.
The next phase was quite a struggle for our heroes when they attempted to find other musicians who cared enough to be in a band and stick with it. Jay knew someone who played bass who somewhat resembled Jesus Christ himself. Unfortunately, "Jesus" wasn't as holy as he seemed. His style and ideas didn't fit with the sound and his priorities were not with the band and they parted ways.
On a more positive note, in the middle of this Jesus business, Mike and Jay met a melancholy saint, who seemed to be a more accurate answer to our prayers, by the name of Jason Bates (related to Norman?) at a party. He said he played a little bit of this and a little bit of that, and they told him to come out to their next practice. They shared many similar interests with each other and and from then on, Jason became a part of The Other Syde.
After the departure of the "Jesus" character, the trio decided it was time to get serious. Jason laid down his parts for the already existing songs and new songs were laid down as well. Not long after, Jason found a new program for recording and editing purposes and the band set to work on souping up the old songs with it.
The next thing they knew, the band was asked to be on Funeral Disease Records. Assuming they had nothing to lose, they accepted the offer. The band is currently working on finishing their album entitled DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS, which should hopefully be finished by late spring 2006.
The band is eagerly awaiting the arrival of new victims on The Other Syde of the door.
